The Rev. Nancy Shaffer grew up United Methodist in a small town in northern California's San Joaquin Valley, surrounded by peach orchards and vineyards. Swimming, reading one hundred books a summer, and participating in 4-H were primary interests. Following high school graduation, she studied for a year as an exchange student in Finland, and then returned to California for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. She graduated from the University of California at Davis in psychology and from California State University, Sacramento in school psychology. She served as a school psychologist in both northern California and the Chicago suburbs.
A graduate of Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley, Rev. Shaffer served her internship in Annapolis, Maryland, and then congregations in Monterey, California; Glen Allen, Virginia; and Evanston, Illinois before coming to Ann Arbor. Her emphasis in ministry is on teaching those of all ages to ground themselves in spiritual practice, find the good in the ordinary and daily, and live Unitarian Universalist values in daily and concrete ways. Rev. Shaffer's responsibilities at UUAA this year include oversight and shaping of the Spiritual Growth and Development Program for children, youth, and adults. She also engages in pastoral care, including leading of memorial services.
Rev. Shaffer's favorite non-church place to be in Ann Arbor is the farmers market, walking among rows of bright fruits and vegetables that change with the seasons. The natural world - including such mundane delights as tomatoes and kale - finds its way into much of her poetry, along with relationships and Michigan wonders like bright red fall leaves and snow.
