Our congregation continues an active participation in a small group ministry to collect and distribute used books to State Correctional Facilities. We accept undamaged books for redistribution to our confined readers in several key facilities.

Started in 2006, the Prison Books Group has increased our congregation’s donations from about 500 in 2006 to 1100 in 2007 with a target of 1500 for 2008. Our congregation serves the Huron Valley ( Men’s & Women’s) Facilities and the Jackson (Men’s) G Robert Cotton Facility.

Here are some ways to “get involved”:

1. Volunteer to join the Prison Books Group .We can use additional packers/deliverers. Participation generally involves group meetings no more than quarterly. (We may have an occasional special event for collection/delivery). The group has fun while working/planning this important ministry.

2. Donate books. We can always use books. Books can be brought to UUAA and dropped off just inside the entrance to the upper level of the RE wing opposite the front door. Or, we can make arrangements to pick them up at your residence.

3. Contact our coordinator. We always want to hear from interested members so we can explain our program and listen to new ideas for growth and improvement

The Sunderland Library, which is maintained by the Library Committee, has adult and youth books related to Unitarian Universalism and other topics around which there is congregational interest and activity.  Some representative topic areas: LGBTQ Issues -- Environmentalism -- Various Religions & Modes of Spirituality -- Celebrations/Rituals -- Grief & Loss -- Diversity -- Congregational Life -- Conscientious Eating, and more!  The Library also hosts a Magazine Exchange, where anyone can freely bring or take magazines related to any topic.

We happily accept donations of books from the congregation.  If the committee determines that any donations do not fit within our collecting guidelines, we pass them along to the Prison Books program first, if appropriate.  If you have any questions about a contribution you would like to make, please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Also, we always welcome the talents and energies of folks who are interested in books, libraries, or supporting congregational activities.
