PEACE begins when the hungry are fed.CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. Since 1975 our congregation has been a key participant in the annual Washtenaw County CROP Hunger Walk organized by the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice as an interfaith response to local and world hunger. In the last 36 years walkers from some 50 area congregations and schools have raised more than one million dollars to assist both local and international agencies in relieving hunger and addressing its root causes. Please Join Our Team of UUAA Walkers next Fall for the 2012 CROP WalkThere are usually 1 mile and 5 mile routesFamily friendly, wheelchairs and strollers welcome. The 2010 CROP HUNGER WALK raised $56,525 to fight hunger! THANK YOU to everyone who walked or sponsored a walker.
...And what a glorious Autumn day it was! Over 450 walkers enjoyed the beautiful weather while joining with an interfaith gathering of over 450 people from 50 area congregations, schools and organizations bearing witness to the fact of hunger in our world and right here in our community. 350 pounds of canned food were collected and donated to Northfield Human Services and Emmanuel House. The following agencies each received part of the local monetary contributions: L.O.V.E. thy Neighbor (First United Methodist), SOS Community Crisis Center, Avalon Housing, Interfaith Hospitality Network, Peace Neighborhood Center, Aid in Milan, Catholic Social Services, Packard Health, Community Action Network, St. Andrew's Breakfast Program, and Hope Clinic.
"We walk because they walk" - in solidarity and in unity - "Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty". Some 2,000 communities across the country participate in CROP events each year. Our congregation has always proudly ranked among the top fund raisers for our local CROP Walk. Money raised is divided between international and local agencies that work to alleviate hunger.
The 2009 CROP Walk
Over 500 walkers from 60 different faith communities and organizations participated in the 2009 walk, raising over $40,000 for local and international hunger programs. Our First UU Ann Arbor team raised over $4000 and contributed 8 bags of canned food to this very worthy cause. AND we had fun taking part!
