Renewable Energy Project PDF Print E-mail

One of our UU principles states that we have "respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."  Our congregation is on the road to renewable energy generation for the 21st century.

Fundraising and planning have been underway for the future installation of a visually appealing, renewable energy generating wind turbine and/or photo-voltaic solar panels on our property to serve both the power needs of the church and the educational needs of the community. The discussion on the specifics of this project will continue through 2009 with implementation planned for early in 2010.

Benefits of Harnessing the Wind and Sun @ UUAA

Education – all ages of UU congregants, as well as neighbors and township residents, will be able to learn from our use of windpower and solar power with a set up for full-time monitoring and website reporting; Youth classes will be able to participate, gain experience and even contribute to a sustainable and diverse energy future.

Reduced Use of Fossil Fuels – by capturing air currents and sun from our planet’s atmosphere, some percentage of the electricity used by the church will come from this “free fuel”, replacing historic use of ever more costly fossil fuels that require burning for release of their energy.

Visibility and Outreach – as a landmark architectural feature, the sleek monopole small turbine can help engage and relate to widespread & sustained interest in renewable & alternative energy. Well-landscaped and suitably located energy structures can draw attention to this project.

Savings – in monthly operating expenses, the new energy generators will provide some measure of immediate and long-term offset to the electricity bills of UUAA, while also encouraging conservation efforts and possible development of future capacity to serve as an emergency shelter.

NOTE that this project has been evolving since fundraising began. Originally a wind power project, we are now incorporating both wind and solar power.
