2012 Partnership with Huron Valley Habitat for Humanity

Each year since 2000, our congregation has played a very active role in a partnership with 18 area churches on "Good News House" projects -- local Habitat for Humanity home renovations that provide low cost housing for families in our community. Volunteers have an opportunity for real hands on social justice commitment by working on site, making lunches for workers and/or donating money for renovation costs. This year's financial pledge is again $7000.

No special skills are required to work on the house. You must be 16 or older to work at the site. Over the last 12 years we have helped 17 families own homes in our community. Since 2009 we have renovated foreclosed homes rather than building new homes, helping to stabilize neighborhoods and rebuild communities. Please join us in this important community outreach.

2011 Home Dedication held 1/29/2012

On January 29th we welcomed the Pope family to 1229 Warner Street, one of our renovated 2011 Good News Homes.A short snow storm made the ribbon cutting a bit more challenging than usual! Thank you to everyone who helped make Carlas Pope and her daughters' dream of owning their own home come true.

In 2010 the Good News House group helped three Washtenaw County homes get ready for families. The home at 1579 Harvest Lane was dedicated on Feb 27th. The third home in Ypsilanti, which we helped finance but did not supply volunteer labor is still awaiting a good match for a family.

The home at 1648 Harvest Lane was dedicated on October 3, 2010.

Why rehab instead of new construction?...

Rehabbing existing homes provides an opportunity to take the negative situation in our housing market into a positive for our community.  In addition to serving twice as many families for the same amount of money, rehabbing: preserves existing resources; builds up existing neighborhoods; keeps houses from sitting vacant and deteriorating surrounding home values.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization whose mission is to provide decent, affordable housing for people in need. Homeowner families are carefully selected based on income and other guidelines. The families are required to contribute hundreds of hours of “sweat equity” in their homes and other Habitat projects. You can read more about the Good News House on their web site.
