Welcome to the music program of First UU! We are committed to providing excellent quality, exciting and diverse musical experiences that spiritually fulfill musician, congregation and community member alike. The music you'll hear at First UU is as diverse as the cultures, beliefs and walks of life that comprise our congregation. So whether you're a jazz pianist or a gospel singer, a classically-trained bassoonist or country fiddler, there is a place for you here. Explore our page, join us at one of our exciting rehearsals and contact our music director to become a part of the musical experience.
The Chalice Singers
Rehearsal Schedule: Thursday evenings, beginning promptly at 7:45 in the Fahs Chapel. The Chalice Singers at FUUAA present music from a myriad of religions and cultures for Sunday services. There are also concerts and holiday music throughout the choir season. The Chalice Singers are currently welcoming new members for the 2009 - 2010 season. Join the Chalice Singers as we explore the wonderful diversity of musical expression.
The Chalice Sparks (3rd to 8th grade choir)
Chalice Sparks is the UUAA's choir for 3rd through 8th graders. Singers in this group meet weekly to sing, play percussion instruments, explore creativity, learn to read music, grow in friendship, and prepare to serve the church and community through music. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 8:15 pm. Linda Jones is the music director and Allison Halerz is the accompanist. The Chalice Sparks participate in worship about once a month during the school year. Young people are welcome to join this performing group if they are willing to make the commitment to attend rehearsals and performances regularly. Linda Jones may be reached at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or by calling 734-761-2497. A Sparks Retreat, "Igniting the Sparks," will kick off the season on Saturday, September 11, 2010 from 11:00 AM to 2:00pm in the Jackson Chapel. Choir members will picnic on the lawn, start working on our music for the fall, get to know each other, play games, and work on a special project. (Yes, it's a mystery for now, you'll just have to come to find out!) Anyone in grades 3-8 is encouraged to come to the Sparks Retreat. If you are new to the choir, this will be an excellent chance to find out if Chalice Sparks is an opportunity you would like to be part of. Chalice Sparks regular weekly rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 from 7:15 to 8:15pm in the Jackson Chapel. More about Linda Jones... Drumming Circles
Family-friendly drumming circles are now a regular part of FUUAA's music program as of Fall, 2008. Lori Fithian provides drums and helps us keep the beat so we can drum, sing and dance together in celebration. Her focus is good, clean FUN with rhythm games and other silly stuff that will help everyone get in touch with their musical spirit. It's a fun way to meditate too - when you get your hands on the drums and get in the community groove, you'll forget about everything else! Everyone is welcome, all ages, no experience necessary - if your heart is beating, you've got the beat! Watch the newsletter for the schedule, and see you in the circle! More about Lori Fithian...
The Handbell Choir
Instrumentalists and SoloistsOur congregation loves to hear from the talented instrumental musicians and solo vocalists in our midst. Our opportunities for instrumentalists and solo vocalists change during the season, so if you are interested in sharing your gifts with the congregation as a soloist or ensemble, please contact our music director here. We are especially interested in promoting and showcasing the greatly diverse possibilities of powerful music expression. Hardly any type should be overlooked! Bring the music that is dear to your heart, and share it with this great congregation.
